catnip

nepeta cataria

Counter to what you might expect, catnip’s effect on humans is the OPPOSITE of its effect on cats. Similar to chamomile in action, efficacy and safety, catnip is one of our favorite plants to lean on when looking to take the edge off of anxiety. A gentle hypnotic nervine, catnip can stop a panic attack in its tracks without being too sedating.

It helps to ease both the emotional and physical symptoms of nervous stress. Catnip’s carminative and antispasmodic properties ease digestive tension & cramps, relaxing muscles throughout the body and providing relief from headaches, while its affinity for the nervous system supports mood, eases insomnia and relaxes the mind. In calming frantic thoughts, catnip also helps make room for cleaner focus.

Catnip is a gentle yet effective remedy for kids, helping them through cold & flu symptoms. It’s also a great plant to lean on when dealing with gas, bloating or colic.

We put catnip in our Armor Clad tincture. If anxiety tends to bother you, this is a great secret defense to keep in your purse or pocket, or by your bedside.

We get ours from wild gardens tended by friends in northern Vermont.*
